Just had a 35 minute discussion with my 9 year old son about 28/7 = 4 & 28/4 = 7. It was probably the best math conversation I’ve had this year.

“Wait a minute Dad, I bet you didn’t notice that when you put all the fractions with the same denominators together they equal 1 whole AND the even number denominators can only equal 1/2.” I asked “What do you notice?” and he talked for 12 minutes.

My son, who’s in grade 4, was given a 37 page holiday break packet. He just “finished” and I’m wondering would it be wrong of me to tell the teacher I expect all pages to be graded and recorded.

Recognize the image on #13? Not a single 3rd grader did so of course they guessed at the answer before I showed them what it was AND what it’s used for. #8 prompted the response, “I’ve never seen a teapot a day in my life” from a 3rd grade student. Cultural Mathematics is Real.
