Apropos of absolutely nothing newsworthy today, my study on the effects of #IHL and #ethics training on military conduct has been published by ICRC 🧵 1/ shop.icrc.org/military-train…

Humanitarians are among the most worried by the discussions taking place at this year’s Munich Security Conference. We see the world from the perspective of those most impacted by crises. We know that less international cooperation means more lives lost, more misery, more insecurity for all.

It's hard to believe that this was all necessary to fight Hamas rather than an act of collective punishment against ordinary civilians and a step in the plan of Israel's far-right ministers to render Gaza unlivable as a pretext for mass forced deportation. x.com/AJEnglish/stat…

"As the occupying power, Israel is legally bound under Article 59(1) of the Fourth Geneva Convention to allow and facilitate humanitarian relief for civilians in need. The deliberate obstruction of aid constitutes a grave breach... and a war crime under international law."

I am shocked by the attack by the Israeli army on a medical and emergency convoy on 23 March resulting in the killing of 15 medical personnel and humanitarian workers in Gaza. Medical personnel and humanitarian and emergency workers must be protected by all at all times.

"A survivor from a massacre of Palestinian paramedics and rescue workers in Gaza has said he saw Israeli troops open fire on a succession of Red Crescent ambulances and rescue vehicles and then use a bulldozer to bury the wreckage in a pit." theguardian.com/world/2025/apr…

"I heard the voice of one of those team members who was killed. His phone was found with his body and he recorded the whole event. His last words before being shot: 'Forgive me, mom. I just wanted to help people. I wanted to save lives.' And then he was killed.

This is the post I never wanted to have to make. Earlier today, news arrived that my position as a history professor for US Army CGSC has been eliminated in accordance with DOD cuts. There is no chance of reassignment, and the entire Fort Belvoir campus will be stood down.

As the occupying power, Israel has unequivocal obligations under international law – including international humanitarian law and international human rights law. Yet currently no humanitarian supplies can enter Gaza. Meanwhile, at the crossing points, food, medicine and shelter

The situation for Palestinians in Gaza is beyond description, beyond atrocious & beyond inhumane. A policy of siege & starvation makes a mockery of international law. The blockade against humanitarian aid must end immediately. This is a moment for moral clarity & action.

#Gaza: Palestinians have been presented the grimmest of choices: die from starvation or risk being killed while trying to access the meagre food that is being made available through #Israel’s militarized humanitarian assistance mechanism.

I decided to become a journalist aged fifteen after reading ‘1984’ and being appalled at the thought that governments could rewrite history. Orwell knew the USSR did it. Now China pretends the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen. It did. I was there, and saw it for myself.

Over 120 armed conflicts are happening in the world, and millions of civilians are suffering the humanitarian consequences of them. Respecting the rules of war is not an option: it is an obligation of all parties to armed conflicts.
