A memorable day orchid-hunting today in Rhodes, with thousands of migrant dragonflies and butterflies our companions, blown in on strong southerly winds with much dust from N Africa. The orchids didn't disappoint, with many glorious Ophrys species, hybrids and variations enjoyed.

I started photographing wild flowers in and around Athens exactly 20 years ago, in 2005. This is a type of orchid. It's very tiny. Macro phone pic.

Beauty and the beast! We spent today exploring olive groves, seeing plenty of the Rhodian Ophrys specialities - attaviria, blitopertha, colossaea, and lindia. However, these striking Ophrys calypsus #orchids were showstoppers - a flavescens type, and a double-lipped lusus form.

A small selection of the Ophrys orchid species seen today, as our overall weekly tally of species seen here in Rhodes by our Orchid Conservation Alliance guests moved past 40. Most importantly, we're having a wonderful time with much laughter and high spirits.

So absolutely made up , my jaw nearly hit the floor when BeckyCMD found this “alba” Brancifort’s Orchid in the lava fields of Mount Etna Sicily this morning , how many orchid enthusiasts have been privileged to find one of these , don’t think we will top this European Orchids & Wildflowers

Any day that features Ophrys cretica and O. reinholdii, with their strongly contrasting white lip markings, is a good day. Here in Rhodes we enjoyed both yesterday on the #OrchidsOfRhodes tour I'm co-leading with Dr Richard Bate for Mariposa Nature Tours. #orchids
