Do you have yellow flowering plants growing in the riparian areas near your farm? Perhaps Hill mustard (Bunias orientalis) has moved into the area? This plant is an invasive biennial weed which requires strategic control to slow it's spread. To learn more- youtu.be/vMycSQC96d0

This cereal rye has started to flower and is nearing the stage to terminate with rolling. The farm plants a pumpkin patch alongside their corn and soybean fields each year to share with the community. Cover cropping goals include weed control, soil health, and clean pumpkins!

Soil conditions were dry and firm, but no-till corn planting in southern WI went surprisingly well. Perhaps this is anecdotal, but observing the soil health guidelines seems to improve soil functionality in adverse conditions and increase farm resiliency. nrcs.usda.gov/conservation-b…

Winter annual weeds are nearing viable feed formation in southwest WI. The seed head on the right is Hill mustard, a prohibited/restricted weed in WI. Taking a minute this summer to clean off the mower before moving on if viable weed seed is present can help slow the spread!

The Extension NOPP research team in Southern WI is studying the optimum N rate for corn grain production following soybean with a cereal rye cover crop. The team collected soil nitrate and cereal rye biomass samples today and appreciated the company of our Extension dog, Emjay!

Attended the Walworth County Farm Bureau Dairy Breakfast in Sharon, Wisconsin today! In addition to my breakfast, I checked out what the cows were eating- high quality feeds grown on healthy soils.
