ADC 2025 kicks off with our first speaker of the day, with Lewis Goodall reflecting on the first year of the new government, the opportunities that have come with it and the challenges that lie ahead.

Goodall goes on to discuss the state of social democracy in the 21st century, the role of civil servants within it, and the political changes the country may face between now and the next election, warning of the "pied pipers of politics". #FDAADC25

Few trade unions have a history as significant as Solidarność, so it was an honour to meet their Deputy President Bartłomiej Mickiewicz to talk about the challenges faced by trade unions in Poland and in particular the public sector.

We all want improvements to public services. A civil service that can attract the right skills is essential to that. Cutting the pension scheme will only make that harder. My opinion piece for The Times and The Sunday Times. thetimes.com/business-money…

Retaining - as well as recruiting - talent is key to any organisation’s success, not high churn rates & uncompetitive pay. If govt wants to transform public services it must move away from a hand-to-mouth approach & deliver a new long-term strategy on pay. civilserviceworld.com/professions/ar…

It’s disappointing to see that the civil service strategic workforce plan, promised with the Spending Review, will now not be published until later this year. As I told Civil Service World, this lack of detail leaves civil servants with more questions than answers. civilserviceworld.com/professions/ar…

Great to be at Civil Service Live in Belfast yesterday, meeting lots of civil servants from both UKCS and NICS. It was fantastic to meet so many FDA members, and get talking to civil servants about the benefits of FDA membership!

We’ve had a rollercoaster few years when it comes to standards in public life. What better time to reflect on 30 years of the Nolan principles, what we’ve learned and what now needs to be done & who better to lead on this than Institute for Government - proud to be invited to contribute.

Yet again, we see a tired narrative that the route to solving funding issues (in this case NI water) is simple: cut public sector jobs. The problem is, this is never followed by any substantive proposal on where/what jobs should be cut and the impact on service delivery.

Short clip of me on View From Stormont representing FDA union tonight. While lessons need to be learned regarding major capital projects, there has been an outsized focus on the civil service. We need to look at ALL route causes, not simply using civil servants as scapegoats.

"It can't just be the Civil Service who takes the blame" Robert Murtagh - FDA National Officer NI 🟣 told Nathan Hanna "we need to look beyond just the Civil Service" for why infrastructure projects are not being completed on time as "five out of the last eight years, we haven't had ministers in place"
