Very proud of OAC endorsement. Obesity is not a number on a scale; health/illness must be assessed at the individual level by accurate clinical diagnosis. Reassuring to see that most doctors and the public appreciate objective definitions of obesity when they see one.

How does a diagnosis of clinical/pre-clinical obesity inform treatment strategies? Watch the second session of the commission’s launch where we explain that clinical/pre-clinical does not mean treatment/no-treatment, just different treatment strategies eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%…

ā€œRiskā€ means probability of a future, negative health outcome. Disease is about certainty, it’s here and now. Obesity can be one or the other at the individual level. Accurate diagnosis must distinguish preclinical obesity vs clinical obesity for personalized, cost-effective care

Clinical obesity is a disease because it is defined and diagnosed by organ dysfunctions directly caused by obesity alone. A list of diseases associated with obesity is not a (standalone) disease diagnosis. Such frameworks cement the idea of obesity as a risk rather than disease

BMI aligns with excess adiposity in 98% of US adults, but the Lancet Commission redefines obesity by its health impact—not just fat. Diagnosis should reflect dysfunction, not size alone—enabling precise, personalized, and stigma-free care. Francesco Rubino
