While the French celebrate the rebuilding of Notre Dame, the National Trust has decided to leave the majestic Clandon Park as an evocative ruin following its devastating fire. History will not remember this decision kindly. It must be rebuilt, they have the insurance money

“I say barbarous because it's a complete lack of confidence that we can rebuild what was there.” The National Trust’s decision not to restore the ruined Clandon Park House is “barbarous", classical architect Francis Terry tells #TimesRadio. @HugoRifkind

Mid twentieth century design was creating a better world, evolving eternal patterns to bigger buildings & higher streets. Here pilasters, & spandrels, cornices, a mezzanine first storey and a string set back help this six storey building improve the street. Gentle Density

createstreets Francis Terry Absolutely!! There should be a national programme of heritage restoration and rebuilds. Heritage Identity and civic pride are far more valuable in the long term than numbers on an economic balance sheet in the short term.

This is a tweet posted in 2019. #Clandon should do the same. Replace what was lost, faithfully. What is the point of heritage legislation if that isn’t done?

What a spectacular improvement. If more new buildings were such a palpable IMPROVEMENT on the status quo would more than 2% of people trust developers to improve existing places? Well done Francis Terry
