With all that's going on in the Levant, we are rightfully focused on that but I'll go ahead and recommend books on other parts of the Arab region. Some book recommendations: "Burning Shores: Inside The Battle For The New Libya" it the best introduction to Libya post-2011

A few years ago, a UAE official “informed” me his country wasn’t sending arms into Libya, when we knew that it was. Also, there’s no reason why the administration can’t provide Congress with its assessment of whether the UAE is telling the truth today. This is a delaying tactic.

January 17, the date when McGurk promises to give Congress an assessment of whether the UAE is providing support to the RSF in Sudan - something he could provide now - is the last weekday of the Biden Administration.

True; too many academics ignore this: "Research has become harder to read, especially in the humanities and social sciences...much of the general public suspects that some academics use gobbledygook to disguise the fact that they have nothing useful to say" -The Economist, 18/12

Extraordinary New York Times Video investigation of mass atrocities in Sudan by the RSF militia, which is supported by the United Arab Emirates. Bravo to the video makers; it's brilliant. And sad that Pres. Biden still won't publicly speak out about the UAE role: nytimes.com/video/world/af…

Tunisia's vulnerability to climate change – evidenced by drought and dwindling water reserves – is worsened by Algeria's water policies and Saied's governance failures, which have deepened its dependence on Algerian food imports. #Tunisia #xborder carnegieendowment.org/research/2025/…
