UN Ocean Conference starts next week in Nice, France. PĆ”draic Fogarty noted, an Irish ministerial delegation will attend, but real action starts at home. Publishing the MPA Bill must be the first step to real action for our seas & communities. thejournal.ie/readme/ireland… #FairSeas

Productive meeting today with CiarƔn Ahern TD, The Labour Party Ireland Spokesperson on Climate, Environment, Energy & Transport. We emphasised the urgent need for Government to publish the long-delayed Marine Protected Areas legislation, so actual restoration & conservation can begin. #FairSeas

EU #OceanPactā€¦ā€accelerate efforts to meet the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 target of legally protecting 30% & strictly protecting 10% of its seas. This implies proposing management plans for each MPA, based on science, with the involvement of all local stakeholders.ā€ #FairSeas

We're here at the UN Oceans Conference in Nice. The Taoiseach MicheƔl Martin will be speaking today and we hope to hear announcements, not only on the blue economy, but on plans for effective marine protection #UNOC3

Fair Seas (@fairseasireland) 's Twitter Profile Photo

At UNOC, MicheĆ”l Martin said ā€œthe European Ocean Pact will prioritise maritime policy and cover areas such as sustainable economic activity in coastal communities & the development of renewable energies.ā€ But no mention of ocean restoration, a key focus of the pact. #FairSeas

Unfortunately MicheƔl Martin didn't make any new commitments to protect Irish waters at #UNOC2025 Countries are announcing ambitious new plans throughout the week and we hope that this will encourage others to follow. However, good news as more countries ratify the #BBNJ

A lot of progress made this week in Nice, France to advance ocean protection. The most impressive announcements came from small island nations (aka large ocean nations) such as French Polynesia. Sadly, Ireland had no announcement at all. #FairSeas irishtimes.com/environment/cl…
