One of the many perks of our work is when a farmer sends you pictures like this. Lovely flock of Yellowhammers on an Essex farm today, with a Goldfinch tucked in the bottom of the frame. Pic expertly taken by Maddie Lord.

The Common Nightingale - a 🧵 So named because the species frequently sings at night, as well as during the day. The word nightingale derives from night and ‘galan’ which historically meant to sing in Old English

A 3-year rotation is probably optimal for maintaining the bushy structure whilst ensuring plenty of flowering for the pollinators: cutting 1/3 of them every year rather than all of them every 3 years

The Dog Rose is a vigorous, commonplace shrub that has pretty pink flowers in the summer. It is fast-growing and given enough support, will climb other shrubs or trees.

The teasel belongs to a genus of tall, biennial plants which can reach the height of a person and probably best-known for the brown, prickly stems and conical seed heads, which persist long after the plants have died back for the winter.

Red admirals can hang around until as late as Nov - some remain for winter. In Sept they are still happily on the wing. Hedgerow & fallen fruit is a great source of food during autumn. Leaving ivy to flower can provide a good source of nectar when little else is flowering 📷RSPB
