The Hazaras of Kandir, Uruzgan, were forced to pay 30 million AFN to Pashtun tribes and Kuchis to buy back their own lands—or face eviction backed by the Taliban. The Taliban’s Pashtun-majority rule continues their ethnic oppression with impunity.

Delighted that Opinio Juris has published this piece that I co-authored with my brilliant colleague Azadah Raz Mohammad. We look at the opportunities, challenges, and critiques of efforts to #EndGenderApartheid, including the way forward.

Sadly, such spurious & dubious views are not uncommon. Back in 2021/22, several analysts of #Afghanistan dispelled the inaccuracies in this submission (& the like). Along w/ others, william maley, Nematullah Bizhan, Farkhondeh Akbari, Niamat Ibrahimi , Nishank Motwani, & I offer more

A brilliant research article on Hazara women’s political agency in the late 19th century. Thanks to Dr Ali Karimi & Ms Massuma Nazari for their source-rich work. With so few resources on Hazara women, this article is a foundation for future research. 🔗 ia600707.us.archive.org/28/items/jesho…

Why are India and Pakistan — two nuclear powers — once again on the brink after the Kashmir attack? And why South Asia’s proxy wars and their consequences continue, even after the Taliban's takeover in Afghanistan. A short thread 🧵👇 taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/…

Devastating reports of suicide of young woman in Ghor #Afghanistan. My thoughts are with family. Investigation & accountability needed. Systematic gender oppression also requires more mental health support. For those struggling, talk to others, incl. professionals. There is hope

On this day 4 years ago, a triple bombing at Sayed al-Shuhada school in Dasht-e-Barchi Kabul targeted Hazara schoolgirls. No perpetrator has been brought to justice. I worked with survivors—brilliant, brave girls battling anxiety, seizures & deep trauma. They’ve received no help.
