An interesting feature of Scottish planning is that it occasionally allows ruined castles to be restored. The reason is partly that conserving a ruin is actually very difficult: once rainwater can enter the masonry, frost action destroys the mortar and the building eventually

Is this the most stunning building you've (probably) never heard of? It should be one of Britain's, or even Europe's, most famous buildings. If you want to find out more...

Sobering reading from Kate Demolder. Having co-researched and written a recent book about the history of Limerick pubs, I concur with your report: rte.ie/lifestyle/livi… Irish publicans on the bar trade: "The show is basically over"

On this day in 1904, James Joyce met Nora Barnacle on Nassau Street. This chance encounter between the young chambermaid from Galway and the amorous writer-slash-singer would chance the face of modern literature. The usually scruffy and penniless Joyce was dressed in glad rags

During the local, general and mayoral elections of 2024, nearly every candidate expressed strong support for protecting our built heritage. One year later and all but one (Maria Donoghue, Ind Councillor Limerick City West) have done bugger all. Our built heritage continues to be assaulted. #Limerick

There’s one website where a well-known Irish public rep spent over 14 years making nasty and upsetting comments about all sorts of people. An attempt was made to delete about 6,000 of these posts. This win is timely: bbc.com/news/articles/…
