For those who are down on artificial Nitrogen, it works….! Winter wheat following beans with no artificial Nitrogen applied. This is where food comes from…..🌾🌞🌾

Closing dates for nutrient applications are fast approaching:   1. Apply any remaining N & P allowances/croprequirements by 14th September as allowances can’t be brought forward.   2. Empty slurry tanks while weather is favourable. Ensure tanks are empty prior to housing.

Opening dates for slurry and FYM has now passed in zone A, zone B will be open tomorrow. Who has a fertiliser plan in place already for 2025?

2nd rotation is the best time to start sulphur applications on grazing ground to boost N efficiency and grass growth. Aim for a total of 10-15 units S/acre over the months of April, May, June and July!

Target cattle slurry to silage fields as it’s a valuable source of K and 1st cut silage crops require 80 to 100 units/ac. For more info see: teagasc.ie/media/website/…

Consult farm fertiliser plan and select a well balance N-P-K fertiliser such as 18-6-12+S for grazing fields. For more info see: teagasc.ie/crops/grasslan…

With current Soil Moisture Deficits (SMD) ranging from 40-50mm, grass growth is becoming restricted and consequently nitrogen uptake will be reduced. Nitrogen applications of 20-30 kg N/ha will meet grass requirements. Credit to Met Éireann for the data

If dry conditions persist, when applying fertilizer for second cut silage consider an initial application of 30-40% of total and apply the balance when rain returns and growth increases.

Consult your soil test results/ nutrient management plan and apply potassium (K) to areas with low soil K levels. Grass and crops on soils with adequate K will be more resilient to drought and respond better to nitrogen uptake and growth.
