Taking out a microcredit is not very common. Many Timorese could benefit but high overhead costs result in high interest rates and thus many Timorese fear the risks. Great to meet the leaders of Kabauk and to learn about their efforts to make microcredit more accessible.

Never thought that I would celebrate International Mangroves Day. Don’t underestimate how difficult it is to remain standing in the mud while planting new trees. Hat off to the volunteers who, over the past few years, have planted some 50.000 new mangroves.

To those who think that tradition and diversity can’t coexist.

Tara Bandu is a traditional way of resolving conflicts at community level in 🇹🇱. In Maliana today, it was great to see traditional leaders signing up for a new Tara Bundu to address gender-based violence, making sure that their traditions remain relevant to today’s problems.

It’s great to see when things come together. 35 years ago President Ramos-Horta co-founded the Diplomatic Training Program. More recently, he also played a role in setting up the Human Rights Centre in Dili. A privilege to exchange with 28 HR defenders @ 1st DTP in Dili!

25 years after the Timorese voted for independence, the efforts of civil society and Centro Chega! to help those affected by the conflict cope with it’s aftermath are deeply touching and also troubling since so many wounds still remain open.

Having the United Nations SG in Dili, together with so many of the activists and UNAMET staff who helped make the 1999 popular consultation possible was a great way to learn more about 🇹🇱 history and deeply moving.

Remembering the history of INTERFET, the international mission that first helped end violence in East-Timor, helps understand just how delicate the transition to independence was. A privilege to listen to those involved on all sides.

ASEAN has officially announced Timor Leste’s accession later this year. The EU is looking forward to having a new member in the EU-ASEAN family.
