New paper out today exploring the marine habitat use of Snow Petrels tracked from East Antarctica! Funnily enough, I’m currently on my way to Mawson station for a summer (6 months) to build upon this work with antarctica.gov.au IMAS Link to paper: frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

The scale of the fires currently burning across northern Australia is pretty unfathomable. This animation visualises just the last two months of fire captured by #DEAHotspots - for context, the map covers an area larger than France, Spain and Germany combined...

Incredible to watch tens of thousands of Grey-headed Flying-fox megabats (Pteropus poliocephalus 🦇) leave their roost at sunset to forage for nectar overnight - so many that they're accidentally mapped as rain on the Bureau of Meteorology, Australia weather radar! 🤯 #wildoz

Just back from Namadji National Park with James Vandersteen who is looking at the effects of dingoes on alpine ecosystems. We saw plenty of dingoes including one with a great big rip in its side.

A nice write up about scavengers, including a feature on our work in Australia "Everyone scavenges: From pole to equator, nature's recyclers perform a widespread and largely unheralded service" doi.org/10.1093/biosci…

James Vandersteen and others talking about ACT dingoes. Yes some have odd coat colours, but this doesn’t change the fact that they are dingoes and a native animal. Policy needs to evolve with changing scientific knowledge. abc.net.au/news/2024-05-1… UNSW Science UNSW Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences Mike Letnic

New paper discussing various approaches to marine wildlife surveys from vessels of opportunity! Such a wonderful voyage with many memorable moments. Here, we also provide an open access dataset describing sightings off Tasmania's west coast. nature.com/articles/s4159…
