Thanks EU at the UN - Geneva #MultilateralismMatters for hosting Amy Pope and me to discuss current challenges — more crises, more displacement, less aid. Our message: it’s crucial that EU support to refugees and migrants stays strong. The contrary will create instability and more people will be on the move.

A pleasure as always to exchange with @BobRae, Ambassador of Canada 🇨🇦 to the United Nations 🇺🇳 in New York and UN ECOSOC President President. His advice and support are especially valuable as humanitarian and development aid face unprecedented challenges.

Starting my 4th visit to Chad at the Sudanese border, where refugees fleeing an absurd war and vicious human rights abuses continue to arrive. It’s time for the parties to the Sudan conflict to put an end to it. Meanwhile refugees and their Chadian hosts need much more help.

Most refugees fleeing violence caused by the warring military in Sudan are women and children. Because of aid cuts we are giving them less food, shelter, water, medicine. I appeal to donors from the Chad/Sudan border: please do not reduce support to the victims of the Sudan war!

President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno assured me today that Chad will continue to give refuge to people fleeing war and violence. UNHCR on its part will keep striving to mobilize international resources to support the response to the influx of Sudanese refugees.

I was in Chad. I saw Sudanese refugees arriving, fleeing violence in Darfur. Unless efforts to bring the parties to the Sudan conflict to the negotiating table become serious, the humanitarian crisis will keep growing — as resources to support the response continue to decline.

I am appalled and gravely alarmed by reports of attacks on Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps as well as Al Fasher town in North Darfur. I strongly urge those committing such acts to immediately desist. We cannot look away from these atrocities.

At least 32 civilians killed, 100+ injured in today’s tragic Russian attack on Sumy🇺🇦 UNHCR’s partner NGO Proliska is on site, providing psychological 1st aid, emergency shelter materials, blankets & hygiene kits to affected families. This is unacceptable. This must stop.

It’s been an awful, awful weekend. Civilians were killed again in Ukraine, Gaza, Darfur — in open violation of the laws of war. This is now so frequent that the world pays no attention. But if we allow this to continue, our planet will become a very dangerous place — for all.

Thanks David Lammy for hosting the London Conference on Sudan — with a welcome focus on a political solution to the war; and substantive humanitarian pledges, which we hope will bring much needed resources to relief efforts inside Sudan and in refugee hosting countries.

For lasting peace in Sudan, there must be stability. Innocent civilians should not be forced to flee their homes. Meeting with Amb. Bankole Adeoye and Filippo Grandi, I discussed protecting refugees fleeing the fighting and working with the African Union for a stable Sudan.

#EasterSunday. But not a day of hope and renewal for those caught in war, uprooted by violence, persecuted for their beliefs or identity, pushed back as they flee, deprived of food, shelter and care by aid cuts. For millions, this is not going to be an Easter of resurrection.

May you rest in peace, Pope Francis. You stood up and spoke out — relentlessly — for the poor, the persecuted, the victims of war, the refugees, the migrants. May you continue to give us faith and courage in this brutal world. Pope Francis

Many innocent lives were lost in another Russian attack in Ukraine. Many were injured, including children and pregnant women. Violating the rules of war has become normal in today’s conflicts. No wonder so many people have no choice but to flee and become refugees or displaced.

Thanks to UN ECOSOC President President Bob Rae for convening an important discussion on how to address the issue of forced displacement in a sustainable manner — supporting the self reliance of refugees and displaced people; and ensuring that host communities benefit from the responses.

In times of ostentatious wealth and arrogant power, Pope Francis was led to his grave on the back of a pick up, met by disabled and homeless people, inmates and refugees. Thank you for speaking truth to power and reminding us all — once more — what really matters. Apostolica Sedes Vacans

“Preventing and stopping war – upholding peace and security – this is the Security Council’s mandate. This is your primary responsibility. And one that this body has chronically failed to live up to.” My statement of today to the United Nations Security Council 👇🏻 unhcr.org/news/speeches-…

Today in New York I discussed the situation of Syrian refugees and displaced people with foreign minister Asaad Al-Shaibani. We agreed on the crucial importance of supporting early recovery, to ensure that returnees have access to services, housing, infrastructure and jobs.
