Here is an absolute doozy for #fossilfriday: a find of an ivory point tip embedded in a mammoth rib from the very beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic (ca. 40,000 cal BP) at Kostënki 14 in Russia. Solid evidence that people were hunting mammoth back then.

And now the moment you've all been waiting for...available today open access in #PaleoAnthropologyJournal, I and my co-authors (Queffelec Alain, Dr Robyn Pickering) present our detailed rebuttal for the assertion of deliberate burial by Homo naledi. Thread: paleoanthropology.org/ojs/index.php/…

What drives #handaxe distribution in Europe? 🔥🚨#NewPaperAlert!🚨🔥 After being buried on the editor's desk for over a year, my manuscript on experimentally testing the utility of manganese dioxide powder as a #fire-starting aid has seen the light of day! 😅 #Neanderthals #archeology link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Hugely exciting - 1st comprehensively identified bone spear point from a #Neanderthal site! Found some time ago at #AbricRomaní but recently analysed in detail, likely hafted by being held directly in wood shaft & fixed with (plant?) cord. nature.com/articles/s4159…

What do we find in #Mustatil in #AlUla? How old are they? Did Saudi Arabia have locally made pottery 7000 years ago? Why are there bits of human remains in Mustatil? Want the answers? Our NEW ARTICLE IS OUT! With the excavation results of 7 mustatil! doi.org/10.5334/oq.139 🧵1/

Christina Kolb In another mustatil, we found 11 arrowheads! The first arrowheads found in a mustatil. They are unique & locally produced. We called them Naklah points, named after where they were found in #AlUla. Finn Stileman first identified these- here he’s holding one! /11

Lately I've been using ceramics as a more controlled material in knapping experiments. I decided to test its limits today with Solutrean technology - such a tactile material!

#FlintFriday. Stone tools found with Ötzi, the 5300 year old naturally mummified 'Iceman'. Including a dagger with the preserved handle, arrows, etc. A remarkable insight into the toolkit of a single individual, who ended his days in the Alps with an arrow wound to the shoulder.
