Weather radar sees #meteorites! This #fireball was seen from across the North Island in 2011 and created a debris cloud (bottom left) that persisted for an hour. Analysis by Marc Fries Meteorite Falls, data kindly provided by MetService

Remembering the great work that MetService did on the Wellington daylight #Fireball a year ago. Weather radar often picks up meteorite-generated turbulence and fragments. This sort of analysis should help us find NZ's next #meteorite.

Meteor shower season is here! The next few weeks are the best time of year to be observing #meteors (unless you like the cold during the Geminids). Here is a night of detections from a #globalmeteornetwork camera in #NewZealand. Via Fireballs Aotearoa Credit: Craig Young

The Fireballs Aotearoa and #globalmeteornetwork cameras have detected meteors from a new #meteor shower produced by #comet 46P/Wirtanen! Although it had low activity (ZHR <= 5), it occurred exactly where and when it was predicted.
