Finally arrived at the Friday Harbor Lab! I will be on the San Juan island off the WA coast for a month to learn all about fish biomechanics and field research from Adam P. Summers . This is such a summer camp for adults and I can't be more excited!

There are surprisingly many species known only from a SINGLE specimen, including many that are already extinct. Makes you wonder how many became extinct without a record at all.

Looks like Dr. Karly E. Cohen and I will run our biological imaging apprenticeship course in the winter. 15 credits for 10 weeks of imaging biology using every technique we have available. SEM, CT, fluoro, histology, photography, and confocal. Wheeeeee!!!

The giant water tunnel is greatly enhanced by the addition of a 7 axis robot arm with 6 axis force sensor. Flapping and stabbing and burrowing in the flow! #FHLFishClass2024

The #FHLFishClass is treated to career and fish guts advice from @SEBASTESinBLUE. Lovely research, but also wonderful advice about the academic path.

Finished the parrotfish skull, pretty on the inside and outside. These guys are basically just wrasses that dialed their bones up to 10 so that they can crunch hard stuff... I respect it #backdatwrasseup

CT scan of Eumicrotremus orbis, revealing interesting features of the pharyngeal jaws. Lateral, dorsal, and posterior views of the jaws show the lower jaw protrudes way forward relative to the upper jaw. And the pharyngeal teeth are huge compared to the oral teeth! #lumpsucker
