A mea culpa from me on this story. Initial reporting suggested the old deportation order was SOLELY due to now-overturned murder charge. But at age 19 in 1980 he pled guilty to “intent to distribute” LSD. In immigration law, that’s an “aggravated felony” and authorizes removal.

Importantly, immigration law has no statute of limitations, and grounds for deportation can be applied retroactively. In 1980 when he pled guilty, the concept of an “aggravated felony” didn’t even exist. So he may still be deported for something which happened 45 years ago.
