Here is a great little #DeepLook popular science video about the diving alkali flies of Mono Lake based in part on my research from a few years ago (and others' work too). #monolake #sciencefact Really nice work KQED / KQED Science! kqed.org/science/198379…

It was an honor to be able to contribute to this wonderful story about sensory processing in D. sechellia with my postdoc @dstupski1. Thanks Suguru Takagi, @tomtom_auer, and Richard Benton for orchestrating this big effort!

New preprint showing that flying flies use a previously undescribed yet highly stereotyped search behavior in still air. Fantastic work by my postdoc @dstupski1! Feedback is welcome! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #drosophila #preprint #olfaction

Looking forward to seeing as many of the talks and posters as possible in Seattle this week at #SICB2024. Here are three more to add to your schedules if a spot of fluid and mechanical modelling, or the neurophysiology of wings and antennae, takes your fancy:

I have four great trainees presenting at SICB this year -- free flight behavior using optogenetics in flies to dissect plume tracking. Check out their talks/poster! #SICB2024 (unfortunately I can't make it myself this year..)

My student Arunava Nag collected field data to show that you can in fact estimate the distance to an odor source from odor statistics over reasonably large spatial scales (30-60 meter scales). Out now in The Royal Society interface: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Having more sensory neurons sounds beneficial for perception and behavior, but is it? If so, how? Check out our new publication for some new theories. nature.com/articles/s4146…

Excited to share our new preprint on connectomic analysis of fly taste circuits! We used the connectome to identify neurons and brain regions involved in taste processing, compare properties of neurons that process different tastes, and more! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
