1996/97: What’s It All About? A change of direction for this one, as Sky go for a plethora of big names to tell us what football is all about. And it’s not the only time in this decade that a brilliant Chemical Brothers soundtrack is used.

It’s Allan ‘Sniffer’ Clarke’s 79th birthday today. He scored the winning goal for #LeedsUnited in the Centenary #FACup final vs. #Arsenal in 1972. Here’s some alternative footage of his goal. #LUFC A Football Archive*

August 2001: The Premiership began on ITV, taking over top flight highlights from MOTD. It began at a new time of 7pm, but within two months was put back to 10:30 as more people were watching The Weakest Link on BBC1. Strange days for televised football.

Quick book update. I’ve spoken to some wonderful people so far, including: ITV broadcasting legends; Saint & Greavsie production team; Sprint Challenge runners; Football League employees; Rumbelows staff. Writing this is a labour of love for me. I can’t wait to get it out there.

Sky’s promo for the new series of Soccer AM, from this week in 1997. The start of Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain being in their absolute pomp. An utterly unmissable show back then.

I was too young to remember David Coleman the football commentator. To me growing up, he was the voice of Athletics. Here he is describing Michael Johnson’s incredible 200m Olympic gold in 1996. Some of the finest sports commentary you’ll ever hear.
