Panelists today spoke about the "missing middle" (priests between the ages of 50 and 70) and the various factors of formation that differentiate the younger clergy from their elder brothers in the presbyterate.

"All fraternity is forced -- you don't choose your brothers," noted Fr. Scalia in a conversation about priests trying to avoid fraternity with one another.

A young priest in the audience today compared his first parish assignment as a priest to being airdropped into Normandy. You go from frequent contact with multiple points of support and guidance to being on your own.

"You can avoid the conversation [over theological differences] or you can have it and try to understand each other as brothers in the community. If you can't have those conversations, that's a problem in community life... " - Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C.

One important thing, says Fr. Rampino, is mercy between clergy. It should be "conscious, repeated, and intentional," he said.
