We're often asked how we can tell horses apart. White markings like the unique star and snip on this beautiful mare's face help. But even without markings, the shape of the ear, placement of the hair whorl on the forehead, and nostril shape all help distinguish one from another!

Today marks Black liberation in the U.S. and a major turning point in a long, ongoing struggle for justice. As we work to protect what's wild and free, we look to the legacy of Black resilience, leadership, and liberation as a model for change—and why it matters. #juneteenth

🔥 🚨 BREAKING: A wildfire broke out this morning in Douglas County, NV, near the range of the Fish Springs wild horses and AWHC’s 3,300-acre land preserve. We are in close contact with Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates and our land manager, who is actively monitoring the situation.

Every year, the federal government spends hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to round up and confine wild horses and burros. 🚨 Now, under the Trump Administration’s FY26 budget proposal, wild horses and burros could face mass slaughter. 🚨 #Keepwildhorseswild #protectthem

As these Virginia Range mustangs in Nevada show us, wild horses are deeply emotional beings. They communicate through subtle cues like ear position, facial expressions, and vocalizations such as snorts and whinnies, revealing a rich inner world through their body language!

Wyoming's curly horses are such a delight. They truly make the wild a more magical place. 💫 🦄 🌟 What do you think of this little one's ringlets?!

Summer roundups are less than a week away, with 4,481 wild horses slated to be captured. Each of these horses—and the 64,000 already languishing in government holding—faces the threat of slaughter if the President’s budget is enacted. Take action here!: bit.ly/3ZOnQDP

Horse Colors Part 2: White horses 🐴 Cremellos/Perlinos/Smoky Creams - they can be difficult to tell apart without a DNA test, but we think they are beautiful regardless! With their pink skin and blue eyes, they are a stunning sight to see on the range ✨

One of our favorite things about curlies, aside from their calm and friendly personality, is their curly eyelashes! 💅 We love that every part of these special animals—from their tail to their mane, to their ears to their lashes—seem to want to curl. 😍

✨ Happy Sunday from Glace! Her name means "coated with sugar" or "candied" which we think is quite fitting for this sweet girl! She was originally born into Ziggy's band, and just this year was taken in by band stallion Suntan 🐴

🌄 These young stallions from the Virginia Range, Nev., like to shake things up when they start maturing—challenging older stallions, sneaking in to try and steal a mare. Sometimes they succeed, if only for a few minutes, before being put back in their place by another stallion!

✍️ Why do petitions matter? 📝 Because public pressure shapes laws. The 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act passed unanimously after Americans flooded Congress with letters. When we don't raise our voices, laws are shaped without us. Take action!: bit.ly/3ZSldRp

Horses not only shaped American industry and economy, but our foundational values of freedom, independence, and courage. How ironic is it that we’re stripping wild horses of the very ideals they helped inspire? Join us in celebrating our wild and domestic friends this July 4th 🎆

Today, the BLM begins a bait-and-trap roundup in Sand Wash Basin, CO., continuing a plan to remove 50 horses from this iconic herd. Only 10 were removed last fall—now, 40 more are at risk. It's time to choose a better way—one led by science and compassion—to #keepwildhorseswild.
