What happens when you apply design principles from bottom-up synthetic biology to immunology? In Heidelberg and together with Freddy Frischknecht @platten_michael & Oliver Fackler we compiled the prospects of bottom-up synthetic immunology Nature Nanotechnology rdcu.be/dR0r0

CONGRATS to Franziska Hentzschel for obtaining an European Research Council (ERC) starting grant to work on the 'weird' but wonderful biology of the Arp2/3 complex in #malaria #parasites: klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de/newsroom/en/er…

Happy to see our first 'blendered' cover out EMBO Mol. Medicine featuring an 8 year journey towards a new type of attenuated #malaria #parasite: embopress.org/doi/full/10.10… - just wondering what that ring is doing there

After 4 years of revisions (ok, not exactly working 24/7 on it) Jessica Kehrer and Emma Pietsch got this manuscript to the next level. Using APEX-based proximity labelling in #malaria #parasites we found a new protein important for Plasmodium gamete egress+ookinete migration.

Can’t be at MPM24 parasitesrule so sending greetings with BiologyofParasitism 24 Tshirt. Please all: give big hugs to David Roos and Omar Harb 🍉 for their incredible efforts towards keeping VEuPathDB up and running.

New preprint with Ulrich Schwarz (also @ulrichschwarz.bsky.social) and Johanna Ripp for Physics of Parasitism: Traction force generation in motile #malaria #parasites is modulated by the Plasmodium adhesin TLP. Sporozoite still running in circles, but in many colors. Red: strong force. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Now out in Nature Physics: great work by Christina Hueschen, Rob Phillips, Alex Dunn and coworkers on gliding motility of apicomplexa, combining imaging of surface flows with continuum mechanics modeling. Read the open access paper here nature.com/articles/s4156…

I stared off doing neuroscience and dwindled into the abyss of infection research. So happy that Misha Kudryashev 🔬 ❄🕊️ took up the torch.

You can celebrate success in science as if it's sports. So proud and happy for the amazing students Uni Heidelberg and their fearless leaders. What a joy to watch.

Save The Date : The Next EMBO Workshop « Host-parasite relationship: from mechanisms to control strategies », organized by LabEx ParaFrap, will be held October 5-8, 2025 EMBO Events #Science #Parasite #France
