Amazing year for Western Hudson Bay polar bears. About 1/2 the bears we're tracking are still on the ice! It's almost like 40 years ago. As National Snow and Ice Data Center scientists mentioned at a talk years ago, a good year (or many) don't erase the long-term trends of sea ice loss. Sobering point.
Our #Tech4Wildlife project in BC uses a combination of high-definition video, acoustic imaging sonar, and acoustic recorder from a deep-sea cabled video-observatory to unravel the resting and foraging strategies at depth of sub-adult northern elephant seals 🦭🐟💤 WILDLABS Community
In the video category, we honor Arribada Initiative's thermal camera traps that detect arboreal species' nocturnal activity, Robin Sandfort's AI + segmentation on wild boar piglet videos, and Dr. Heloise Frouin-Mouy's HD video + acoustic imaging sonar and recording to study elephant seals.
Curious about the behavior of northern elephant seals in the deep ocean? 🦭 Join me on Wed, Aug 28 @ 4 pm GMT / 11 am EST for the WILDLABS Variety Hour. As a bonus, you'll also have the opportunity to hear from other fantastic speakers. WILDLABS Community wildlabs.net/event/variety-…
