Very interesting post and discussion in the replies. I think the extract from Bleak House is too hard to make this a fair test, filled with archaic vocab and tropes, but the question of how and how much students comprehend is important. x.com/tracewoodgrain…

If you have any breakable objects to hand that you've been meaning to throw at the wall, this thread can help you tick off that goal. x.com/FunkyPedagogy/…

GET A GRADE 9 IN ENGLISH LITERATURE WITH THESE TWO STEPS THE EXAMINER DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW: - Know the text extremely well - Practise developing and articulating arguments about it over a period of months

A lot of these YouTube videos would be a lot better if they just took the words "Grade 9" out. I'm not against learning high value quotes or widely applicable key ideas for each text.

With critical theory at GCSE, teachers need to distinguish between what's useful to their OWN thinking, and what should be replicated by students. Are trauma, repression and subconscious desire useful for thinking about Macbeth? Yes. Should students be referencing Freud? No.

As so often when Mr Handscombe posts, I'm nodding vigorously, and this debunking of well-meant but self-defeating "happiness v curriculum" stuff is excellent. x.com/JamesHandscomb…

Discovering that the band Pulp have an army of Gen Z fans -- proper, knowing-every-word fans -- has restored my faith in humanity just a little bit.

Honestly, to see music I've loved since I was 14 packing out arenas 30 years later, with a whole new generation in the crowd, and such a euphoric and celebratory atmosphere, and music that touches on youth but also ageing... It was emotional! 😂😭

Trying to think of other music that has made the journey from critically acclaimed to popular to "of their era" to "absolutely beloved" decades later with more force than the music of this band. This is genuinely lasting art that has grown in stature.
