Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

Papst #Franziskus kam „vom anderen Ende der Welt“. Er mischte sich ein, rang für das Soziale & Menschliche. Und forderte seine Kirche immer wieder heraus. Seine Botschaft war für das Hier & Jetzt, auch mal kontrovers, nie auf das Pastorale beschränkt. Seine Stimme wird fehlen.

With the death of Pope Francis, the Catholic Church and the world lose an advocate for the weak, a reconciling and a warm-hearted person. I greatly appreciated his clear view of the challenges we face. My sympathies go out to the religious community worldwide.

I paid my farewell visit to the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra' John Dunlap. In recognition of my work and as a sign of the good relations between the Order and Germany, I was presented with the Grand Cross of the Order of Malta.

After four years as German Ambassador to the Holy See, time has come for me to leave this Mission and serve in a different position. Meeting the Holy Father one last time before leaving has been a great honour. Arrivederci, Santa Sede!

The Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier met His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. in a private audience in the Vatican. It was their first official meeting. Current international affairs and the role of the Church were among the topics of discussion.

Yesterday evening, we celebrated the Day of German Unity with Ambassador designate Dr. Bruno Kahl and many guests of the Holy See, the Order of Malta, the Diplomatic Corps and the German institutions in Rome. A great evening together and an opportunity to get to know each other!

Germany was once divided. In 1989, peaceful protests in the GDR sparked off a revolution – without violence. One year later, in 1990: reunification. A turning point for Europe, made possible through courage and diplomacy. #GermanUnityDay #WeInvestInFreedom

The people in the GDR had the courage to aspire to freedom. With the Peaceful Revolution, they brought down the regime in East Germany. On November 9th, the Berlin Wall fell. Eleven months later, Germany was reunited. Today, our commitment for freedom must be stronger than ever.
