We went from β€œwhat good are the humanities?” to β€œsuddenly, no one can read” in about a year, and the answer to the first question is the disinformation and lack of critical thinking you see all around you. *That* is why you need the humanities. This is what they prevent.

We socialise women to be controlled. This starts from a young age: little girls are taught that they must be nice, can’t be β€œbossy”, and that they should prioritise the needs of others over themselves. The result: women who can’t stand up for themselves and are easier to exploit.

#Adolescence, a fictional TV series, has prompted a lot of discussion about teenage boys, with a lot of hand-wringing, and various fear-based reactions proposed. I worked with young offenders for over a decade, and my son will soon be 13. Here's what I've found to be true. 1/4

As the 'title' poem of Mark Antony Owen's (as much as the project HAS a title poem), Pastoral is a piece that hovers over the spirit of the place that gave my unfolding poetry collection its name. It's part of something I call the Scarecrow Sequence ... and now, part of TopTweetTuesday.
