We are hiring a postdoc to work on our NSF-funded project on suboscine bird diversification! Rough goal is to build phylogenies from massive dataset (data are incoming!) and analyze diversification. Posting: shorturl.at/RkYkE

Happy to share my new article on how morphological diversification proceeds during evolutionary radiations: "The diffused evolutionary dynamics of morphological novelty" pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… 🧵1/12

Published today in Biological Reviews: "New perspectives on body size and shape evolution in dinosaurs" - the biggest paper from my PhD (my favourite chapter, too). doi.org/10.1111/brv.70… Here's a thread outlining some of our key findings. (1/10)

During this work, I wrote a lot of R functions to make discrete morphological matrices more compatible with the R package Phangorn which is designed for molecular data. This includes creating phyDat objects that can accommodate polymorphic state scorings, and more (9/n)

You can find all the functions, datasets and developing R code at my Github github.com/LizzySteell/Ho… Please reach out with issues or suggestions! The code is always under development (one day it might become a package...) (10/10)

Congratulations for this massive accomplishment to Lizzy Steell 🥳🥳🥳New index to evaluate homoplasy and a ton of content (and beautiful figs!) on the effects of levels of homoplasy in macroevolutionary patterns! #homoplasyisnotdusty #superproud

Oh Las Hoyas, what a joy to research and paint you are! Ever since I got myself a book on this locality in 2016 I wanted to do a bigger piece depicting the complex and diverse ecosystem that has been preserved here. While Concavenator and other archosaurs might be the main draw

Glad to share a new paper led by @yara_haridy and Neil Shubin Lab on the early evolution of teeth! Modern and fossil data point at an ancestrally sensorial function for the earliest dentine nature.com/articles/s4158…

For specialists, I also made an additional figure (not included in the News & Views) that places Haridy et al.'s results in a broader context 🧐

Douglas et al. show that up to 99% of evolutionary change occurs at branching points in genes, morphology, and language. A major step for punctuated evolution, aligning with our goal of a unified framework. Niles Eldredge Andrej Spiridonov Blai Vidiella royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

HUGE paper dropped out, congrats to Fernando Blanco for leading this humongous research studying large herbivore ecological structure across the whole Cenozoic and five continents, again tipping points seem to be key. #proudfriend #phdbyteams #congratstotheteamtoo
