Today, I have the solemn responsibility to be the first president to formally apologize to Native peoples – Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Native Alaskan – for what happened during the Indian Boarding School era. It's long overdue.

It’s been 10 years since a sitting president has visited Indian Country. That’s simply too long. I'm here not only to fulfill my promise to be a president that visits Indian Country – but more importantly to right a wrong and to chart a path toward a better future for all.

My apology for what took place during the Indian Boarding School era is only one step forward from the shadows of the past. That’s why I’ve been committed to working with Indigenous communities across the country to write a new and better chapter in our history.

My office is now displaying Tribal flags that the Trump administration removed from the Phoenix VA Hospital. Arizona is proud of the Tribal Veterans who sacrificed for their country. We should recognize their service, not disrespect their heritage.
