Today's M7.0 earthquake in NorCal occurred in a highly seismically active area near the Mendocino Triple Junction where the North American, Pacific, and Gorda plates meet. Notice how this location also marks a transition from northwestern to northern recorded GPS motion.

January 7 is Old-Rock-Day 🪨 & you can't go older than with the Acasta Gneiss-a tonalite gneiss of the Slave craton, NWT/Canada. Dated at approximately 4.03 billion years with Earth being 4.543 billion years old

Some (highly debated) age estimates put the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt in Quebec at far over 4 billion years, maybe even 4.4. If so, it contains the oldest terrestrial rocks representing a basaltic oceanic crust & maybe clues to first plate tectonics iugs-geoheritage.org/geoheritage_si…

It’s #OldRockDay and today we celebrate Earth's incredible history by profiling the amazing rocky shoreline at the Hopedale Mission National Historic Site. These are some of the oldest metamorphic rocks called gneiss (pronounced “nice”), dating to 2.6 to 3.2 billion yr in age.

From 15 million to 6 million years ago, seafloor spreading slowed, leading to deeper ocean basins. New research in G3 suggests this slowdown may have caused global cooling and a dip in sea level of dozens of meters. #AGUPubs eos.org/research-spotl…
