The residual of Hurricane #Helene is still powerful. A big tree branch broke in front of my car as I drove back home. Never thought I could have become a hurricane victim while in Illinois.

I finished a paleoclimate hurricane study using centuries-old documents. It feels eerie to finish my data availability section with: "... datasets are archived by NCEI/NOAA, which is temporarily offline due to Hurricane #Helene. The archived data links are as follows..."

Big data, ML, and other innovations also empower such theoretical work. These tools are making discoveries and applications easier. There will be powerful compounding and synergies of knowledge.

The risk of a third Florida #hurricane has been lurking for a while. The subseasonal signal could materialize next week. Nuances in risk quantification are delicate amidst model and physics uncertainties. A lot will depend on the details of tropical-extratropical interactions.

The best paper on extratropical cyclones in my recent memory. Even if one is familiar with many ideas and techniques, this guided tour of a 200-year endeavor is still likely fascinating. Now... Do we dare to ask "What's next?" with anticipation, excitement, and confidence? 🙂

Year 2024 started with long COVID and was interrupted by emergencies. Nov feels challenging again. Fingers crossed for a strong finish with personal goals. - First manuscript on renewable energy✅ - First manuscript on paleoclimate✅ - First manuscript on AI-based prediction📝

I'm shocked that some grad students don't want to see physical theories and resist AI-related discussions in classes. Seeing how quickly AI is improving & thinking about upcoming disruptions makes me wonder if those students could have careers that they thought they would have.

It is just so sad that the #NeurIPS2024 main conference ended with such a racist remark by a faculty when talking about ethics. How ironic! I also want to commend the Chinese student who spoke up right on spot. She was respectful, decent, and courageous. Her response was
