More of the Jack Snipe. This video shows how it reacts when I make my visible as I go to collect the camera. Note how it flattens itself against the water.

Everybody loves donkeys - but it’s hard to take these animals seriously in a world which regards them as a bit of a laughing stock. Here’s hoping this lad will shed some light on a time when beasts like him were sorely needed… first donk-blog at-> andtheyellowale.substack.com/p/a-donkey

I’m no great photographer, but returning to a 1970s b/w film camera has really helped to focus my writing about Galloway, farming and landscape over the last few weeks - read the results and subscribe at andtheyellowale.substack.com with thanks to Take It Easy Lab

Best views I’ve ever had of Hawfinch on the ground at Llanrwst, such stunning birds, at least 2 present (1 male and 1 female) feeding amongst at least 100 other finches mostly Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch and Siskin

In May ’23, Alan used this “study” to suggest that sheep were the primary cause of wader decline in Scotland. He was wrong & he later conceded that it needs more research. Now he’s doing the same thing again. He knows it’s a misleading comment, he just really wants it to be true

Huge numbers of trees are planted to support black grouse in Scotland every year - but are they actually helping? When it comes to woodland creation for black grouse, the devil’s in the detail… my article in today’s Scribehound Countryside scribehound.com/countryside/sh…

Thanks to everybody who has supported my new writing project - recent posts on donkeys, bullfighting, wild Polish forests, Caspian tigers and hallucinatory wood carving have gradually started to make sense as a direction of travel - subscribe and read at andtheyellowale.substack.com

Wow! Wildlife researchers have captured rare footage of two black wolves crossing a stream in a forest in Świętokrzyskie Province, Poland.

The Scottish Wodwo: “a cruel and godless unbeliever is cursed with madness and doomed to streak naked through the Galloway Hills” - but how does a neatly religious Victorian parable link to wider (and wilder) medieval traditions of grumpy, hairy men? andtheyellowale.substack.com/p/a-scottish-w…

Curlews arriving in numbers now to make their nests for another year in Glen Clova. It’s a shame it’s one of the last strongholds. They seem to like to open moorland and the lightly grazed pastures in the glen. Working_for_Waders Mary Colwell Patrick Laurie

"If you love curlews and lapwings, you’ll be getting used to a feeling of entrenchment, disempowerment and loss... every year seems to mark the intensification of problems and the enrichment of interests antithetical to the conservation of waders". gallowayfarm.blog/2025/03/13/a-f…

The first riggit galloway calves of 2025 - two bulls and a heifer born over the last few ice-cold days to the tune of lapwings, skylarks and the first few sandmartins! Sire is red-pointed white galloway bull "Whitsun o' Craig"

Dream views yesterday of this Bittern, watching it feed along the waters edge and catching a small Pike. Couldn't ask for much better, whilst several others were booming in the background.
