Open access article now officially out in print! Employee volunteering with NGOs in less economically developed countries is a popular form of CSR. It can have critical motivational and learning benefits, but also costs unless returning employees feel their experience is valued!

When investors perceive a shift towards greater legal compliance, they penalize firms the most for political board ties and reward them the most for NGO donations. Indirect influence becomes more legitimate (&>valuable) than direct co-optation and control.
