2/7 Since 1998/99 •Hospital admission rates reduced by 38% ✔️ •Average length of stay reduced by 28% ✔️ (the metrics we are judged on), BUT •occupancy rates of mental health beds have exceeded the recommended 85% threshold for delivering high quality and safe care.

3/7 AND • A&E activity for MH care has doubled => increased need for MH care + •Patients are iller when they come in and iller when they leave => higher thresholds for admitting and lower thresholds for discharging

4/7 All above implies a gap between what’s needed and what’s provided, not enough beds where they're needed and also, that maybe the KPIs are the wrong ones to judge us by. We should use more meaningful metrics to judge MH services' performance.

5/7 How about MH services being measured on how many people we help into meaningful daytime activity, like a job or a college course that they stick with; how many manage to maintain their social relationships?

6/7 To get a job you have to be stable enough to fill in the application and perform at interview; to keep it, you shd be stable so you can turn up reliably and perform the role. To be stable you'd need to take up the Tx offered - meds; psychoRx; diet; exercise; no street drugs

7/7 – that would help ⬇️hosp admissions &⬇️occupied bed days but at the same time encourage focus on⬇️relapse and supporting people to have a good quality of life, which is what most people want for themselves anyway. Time to change what we value (measure) in our system?
