Why GeoCoLab? There are deep inequities in Geoscience in the UK and Globally. We are motivated to provide a digital solution that would help closer some of this inequality. Read more about our motivation 👇 geocolab.github.io/blog/blog1/

GeoCoLab recognises that geoscience has deep inequities at all levels. During the Natural Environment Research Council Digital Solutions to Open Environmental Science Hackathon we set out to explore how these inequities manifest in analytical science.

Nearly all respondents cite a lack of funding and prohibitively competitive national schemes as a barrier to accessing analytical facilities. This was felt most keenly by those respondents who had 1 or more 'marginalised' identity.

What is the impact of the 'access to analytical facilities gap'? During the Natural Environment Research Council Digital Technologies to Open Environmental Sciences, we went on to explore research activities and career trajectories of survey respondents. Full blog 👉 geocolab.github.io/blog/blog4/

The impact of this is felt throughout an individual’s career, as lack of publications has consequences for research reputation, grant capture and research group building.

We know that awards in geochemistry, which relies on analytical facilities, leadership positions, awards and honours are disproportionately given to white men, to the detriment of women and minority groups (Pourret et al., 2021).

As part of the Natural Environment Research Council Digital Technologies to Open Environmental Science Hackathon 2021, we wanted to explore how these inequities in access to analytical facilities may play out in global knowledge production of analytical geoscience.

As part of the Natural Environment Research Council Digital Technologies To Open Environmental Sciences Hackathon, we didn't want to just explore the issues. We wanted to tackle them. In an incredible feat of speed software development, @assortedginger built a proto-GeoCoLab app.
