A very eventful, yet bittersweet, week 7 comes to a close as we begin the long transit back to #Amsterdam. Everyone gathered for the last core to arrive on deck Friday afternoon, marking both the end of the expedition and the program that made it possible.

The mag 7.1 quake near Miyazaki is a subduction megathrust quake, and has motivated JMA to issue an alert that the chance of a much larger one on the adjacent Nankai segment(s) is heightened in the short term. If we had a similar event in Cascadia, the response might be the same.

On 17 Sept, #Chikyu🚢lowered the LWD (Logging While Drilling) tools to the seabed & prepared to drill. On sunny days, scientists take breaks from the lab to enjoy the sunrise/sunsets & fresh air on the helideck. Today, they also celebrated the co-chiefs birthday🎉🎂 #IODP #JTRACK
