A number of years ago I attended the funeral of Ronnie Drew's wife Deirdre. I never met the woman but I heard so many lovely things about her, how much of an absolute lady she was and how well she had looked after Ronnie over all the years of debauchery!

After the funeral Ronnie invited a gang of us back to his house. I was 21, the youngest person there by many many years. There was songs sung and stories told.

Ronnie, who at this point had lost all his hair& iconic beard, was sadly coming towards the end of his own battle& would soon be reunited with his beloved Deirdre& yet while he must've been so saddened& broken hearted he found time to sit with me& impart some wisdom upon me.

On reflection I think Ronnie who had been there, done that & worn the T-Shirt wanted to help a young lad, whose musical journey was only beginning, to reach his potential & not be swallowed up by the industry & its cut throat nature.

I sat at the table with a lot of his friends& listened while he shared years of experience& advice with me on how to make my own path& maintain a successful career in the industry.

Nobody interrupted him& I hung on his every word. When he was finished he stood up, leaned over & gave me a big hug & wished me the very best of luck!

Hard to believe today marks 13 years since his passing. I couldnt be more grateful for having met him, shared a stage with him & for the fact that on his darkest day he put aside so much time to teach a new dog old tricks. Thank you Ronnie. Legend. R.I.P.
