This was a test of the Prime Minister and he has failed it. It is an insult to sacrifices made by the British people that Boris Johnson has chosen to take no action against Dominic Cummings.

I have literally been looking at images of this banner ("of Las Navas"), thought to have been captured by King Ferdinand III or his grandfather Alfonso VIII from the Almohads in the early 13th c., for over a decade. I've seen it in person. Today I finally saw something I'd missed

With this devastating news, we lose an irreplaceable scholar of medieval Iberia. Peter was a wonderful person, full of kindness, brilliance, and wit. He was an innate storyteller. His rooms St John's College, Cambridge were a permanent refuge for Iberianists of all sorts. He will be sorely missed

Stock photos of busy parents on the computer, rated for realism: 1: Mom has both hands on computer, child seems to need no supervision at all. Work is getting done. Mom is even smiling! This sucks, 2 out of 10.

We are very sad to learn that Ian Michael, Hispanic medievalist, died yesterday. He was particularly known for his edition of the Cantar de mio Çid (and his detective fiction). Prof. Michael gave the MÆ Annual Lecture in 1998.

A thoughtful colleague and friend left me an office plant that I apparently can’t kill and I think that is the perfect return to the workplace gift and spirit.
