Deeply saddened by the powerful earthquake that has struck Myanmar and Thailand. This adds to the already critical situation in Myanmar, where millions of people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The EU stands with the people of Myanmar and Thailand.

Our thoughts are with the victims and those affected by the devastating #earthquake in #Myanmar & #Thailand. Germany supports UN relief efforts, especially in the most affected areas. And we stand ready to increase our assistance if required.

In an immediate response after the deadly 7.7 magnitude #earthquake that has struck #Myanmar and #SoutheastAsia yesterday, the EU is releasing €2.5 million in initial emergency assistance.The EU has also activated its Copernicus satellite service to facilitate impact assessment.

China‘s military exercises around #Taiwan increase tensions & are concerning. Stability in the Taiwan Strait is paramount for regional & global security, and affects prosperity also in Europe. Status quo may only be changed peacefully & by mutual agreement, not force or coercion.

The EU Spokesman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anouar El Anouni 🇪🇺 says the EU is calling for an de-escalation of the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, urging both countries to exercise restraint, resume diplomatic dialogue and prioritize the population's safety.

The ceasefire between #Cambodia and #Thailand is an important step toward peace, thanks also to the mediation by Malaysia and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his current role as ASEAN Chair. Prompt implementation and long-term adherence to the agreement are now of the essence.
