If I was running one of the other MLR teams I would be: - Retaining 80% of the 2025 squad - Keep the coaching staff - Play 12 games in the off season with the core squad - Have a reserve grade team play underneath the 2026 MLR season A team that plays together wins together.

It's the reality for Australian rugby not an "embarrassment". We are financially stuck and can't keep all our pro players when the majority of wealth resides in the north. And then players go and play twice as much rugby in systems that are probably better for their development.

Last week against Fiji, I had recall of the pain of losing to Scotland on home in 2017. The Scots didn't have their best players (on British & Irish Lions duties) and their players had less Test experience than the Wallabies. At least now it all makes sense. Still painful though.

Noah Lolesio at age 25 has a combined professional number of 116 games. Marcus Smith, 26 (10 months older), same position and slightly smaller physically, has 225 games. At some point, Australian rugby bears responsibility for not adequately preparing our Test players.

💡Australian 3rd tier rugby idea When Super Rugby Pacific finishes, each SR team has an Under 25 side that enters into the local club competition (Shute, QPR, John Dent, Fortescue). Just younger SR squad and academy players. Wallabies go do their thing and over 25s return to their club.
