Unsurprisingly Cyril Zakka, MD says it better than I could. These are the exact concerns I have about the way we are integrating LLMs into clinical care. It *might* not matter, but we are all participating in an educational Pascal's wager right now. A 🧵🔽

I misdiagnosed myself using AI and applied wrong treatment for a month. Recently saw a physician who diagnosed it in 2 minutes and knew why I was mistaken. I’m bullish about AI but it’s important to be intellectually honest about where it works and where it’s not there yet.

The flip side to the concerns about violating copyright in training data is that there is a also a vast trove of important work that nobody reads & where it would be very good if AIs were trained on it. (Most scientific articles, many reports, a lot of old literature & records)

We're taking a big step towards medical superintelligence. AI models have aced multiple choice medical exams – but real patients don’t come with ABC answer options. Now MAI-DxO can solve some of the world’s toughest open-ended cases with higher accuracy and lower costs.

As some of you may know, I recently moved to London to help lead a new Health AI team! Excited for our first research paper, which demonstrates that AI can tackle medicine’s toughest diagnostic challenges -- at 4x higher accuracy and 20% lower costs than a group of physicians🧵

When AI “commoditizes diagnosis” we have only set the table stakes for the real game: wise and skillful clinical decision-making and management. It’s only the current decrepit state of access to human expert diagnostics that makes this first step at all compelling. HT

It’s kind of interesting, but in some ways AI is making CS much more like biology. We can observe and tweak what it does, but we really don’t know how it’s doing it. A science and engineering discipline rooted in empiricism over theory. I wonder if this trend continues.
