It was to John Clark that Martin O’Neill turned on August 27 2000 to ask: ‘How long is there to go John?’ Celtic had gone 3-0 up against Rangers. “Eh, 34 minutes,” replied John. “No, I mean in total,” said O’Neill. Martin then sees JC frantically counting his fingers. “79 boss.”

I’ve said it before - and it’s open season on being called a misogynist - women’s football will undergo precisely the same experience as the men’s game, in terms of growth, technique, confidence, coaching tradition. It’s a journey. (Never mind that 15 yr old lads can be huge).

When I got into predictable bother a few years back for lamenting the state of goalkeeping in women’s football - in contrast to progress in every other area - a number of women’s coaches contacted me to say goal-sizes in women’s football should have been made smaller…

I prefer women’s tennis to men’s tennis. I prefer men’s football to women’s football. You’re allowed to say these things, right?
