Is economic growth decoupling from resource use & environmental impact? My new paper shows the answer depends to some extent on the way we measure GDP, which changes over time. This allows for finding contradictory results in different studies. 1/9 sciencedirect.com/science/articl

"Inconsistent definitions of GDP: Implications for estimates of decoupling" New great paper by GregorSemieniuk.bsky.social in Ecological Economics I like this part of the conclusion very much 👇 Stop the sterile discussions about decoupling! doi.org/10.1016/j.ecol

What would historical GDP growth look like through a classical political economy lens? For the NSER special issue in honor of Duncan Foley and Anwar Shaikh I use their contributions to answer that question for the US: growth would be slower. nsereview.org/index.php/NSER

The #COP28 outcome calls for "transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner". What this means and how it can be achieved in practice are some of the most pertinent & complex questions we face as we race to keep 1.5°C in reach...

Harris’s fight against price gouging is good economics. It is also popular. This shows Americans have common sense. All of the efforts of free-market economists to beat it out of them have not worked. James Galbraith and me The Boston Globe

Unemployment weakens governments, inflation kills. It’s an old saying. It’s true again. The fight to protect people against price shocks in essentials was lost in the trenches of economics.

I think I understand better than most voters whose policies would have raised inflation more (and agree with most economists that the answer was Trump). But I think most voters know more about their own personal lives and situations than I do--and that I ignore them at my peril.
