Lots of videos past hour showing tribal fighters seizing villages. Druze factions got Israel to expel the government, then embarked on their own ethnic cleansing campaign. What is the endgame here? Hijri & Israel made it clear Damascus can't enter, so who will stop this cycle?

Damascus doesn't understand these are c-insurgency, not military, operations, that rest on 'hearts & minds' MoD's refusal to discipline its troops & prevent constant violations just reinforces Alawite, now Druze, opposition to Damascus, undermining all political efforts.

#Syrie une scène qui reflète la complexité du terrain, des membres des clans sunnites empêchent des voleurs de partir avec des biens de Soueïda

I'm told this new agriculture support project will be conducted in Safita, Dreikish, Baniyas, and Qadmus (ie most of rural Tartous). Focus is on education and basic equipment for farming & water collection.

Yesterday three young Alawite men were stopped at a checkpoint outside their village of Karto #Tartous and beat by security members. Ahmed died of his wounds. The town held a funeral protest today and the checkpoint members were arrested. Now we must see what their punishment is

Usual sectarian propaganda from Joshua. It was 9 teenagers that stormed the council over unaddressed Assad regime violations. It's a problem and it has been dealt with by GSS & Ismaili Council. Damascus has worked hand-in-hand with Ismaili civil society & leaders since day 1.

His support lies in Latakia mostly with ex-security forces where he is still very widely followed. Even ex-soldiers who don't support armed movements join in to listen to him and discuss his statements. Part of the broader post-March 6 distinction b/w Latakia & elsewhere.

My latest looks at three major investigations into the March massacres: Reuters, SCM, and the Fact-Finding Committee I compare their findings & shortcomings and add additional context on the initial uprising & pro-govt deployments from my own field work. syriarevisited.com/p/examining-co…

It wasn't the first case either, & the weeks prior had steady increases in insurgent attacks Feb 26 a recently hired soldier caused an altercation in Qardaha, escalating to wider local protests. As MoD arrived, so did a car w/ weapons for pro-insurgent locals (local statement)⬇️

#Syria: the Security forces identified and arrested the man who killed a minibus driver 3 days ago in the Northern #Homs countryside. The perpetrator was a relative and the motive was personal.

A huge step, hopefully the first trials will begin soon. A genuine and transparent process here will go a long way towards easing tensions around justice and accountability and open the way for accountability of security members from post-December crimes as well.

One thing I hope we see from this investigation and others is a minute-by-minute look at what happened July 13 and 14, especially the timeline of when the MoD sent which units south compared to the timeline of Druze mobilization and where tribal mobilization fell within that.
