Have you ever spotted the UK’s largest ant species? 🐜 Known as the red wood ant or southern wood ant, they’re an excellent predator and can be found in open, sunny spots in both coniferous and broadleaved woodland 🌳 #InsectWeek Insect Week

Trees need bees! 🐝 Did you know 24 species of bumblebee have been found in the nation’s forests? Many plants, including some trees, rely on bees and other insects to pollinate their flowers so they can reproduce 🌳 📷 Isobel Cameron #BeesNeedsWeek #WildlifeWednesday

Concrete Country by Lucy Tomlins. Installed 2021. Sited next to a natural crossing through a shallow beck sits this oversized stile. It expresses an essence of crossing over, of boundaries between water and ground, grass and path, forest and non-forest.

We have had an expert invertebrate specialist surveying in the valley. As well as many other species he found a thriving population of mountain bumble bees. Its Latin name is Bombus monticola. This loosely translates as ‘the booming mountaineer’, what a great name!
