Very excited to (finally!) see our paper out in NatureEcoEvo showing how spatial memory predicts whether, and where, pheasants are killed by predators! nature.com/articles/s4155… (thread!) 1/

Happy to be sharing our paper on the importance of sample storage methods for accurate 🩸 parasite detection! TLDR: it matters! Wiley Ecology & Evolution doi.org/10.1002/ece3.9… Something we should consider more when samples come from different sources or if planning long-term projects 🧐

This is remarkable - to think, back in 2007 when one of the original birds of the North Scotland reintroduction impaled himself on a garden rake we put it down to his eyesight failing in ‘old age’!

**New paper** with Alexandra Gardner, @BakerDJEcol, Jonathan Mosedale and Kevin J. Gaston demonstrates a need to make the UK’s protected areas bigger or better if they are to prevent birds disappearing from the countryside conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/co…

Birds tend fastidiously clear egg shells from the nest, and this is probably why - I found two hatching @CornishJackdaws eggs stuck inside a sibling’s shell in one afternoon last week. This one was trapped and hadn’t yet succumbed to fatigue, but sadly didn’t last long once out.

From 9.5g to 240g in just 26 days! Today we ringed the first @CornishJackdaws chick of the year. While his sibling was delightful, this little fellow was by all accounts self-important and obnoxious. I wish him well.

Jackdaws breed so synchronously that I don’t see much of the family during ringing week, so it was great to have them come and visit me in the field on Sunday. Elo loved it, but Joaquin’s feelings more accurately reflected those of the X25 chick. He’ll learn.

The Cornish Jackdaw Project captured a mother jackdaw attending to her chick the moment it hatched in one of their nest boxes. By studying how jackdaws’ cognitive abilities allow them to survive and reproduce, they're helping to reveal how intelligence evolves. @CornishJackdaws

I’m seeing a lot of anger and disappointment in badger circles today that the badger cull is ending, but not ending fast enough. Apologies for the long thread 🧵, but tet me explain why I think the news is the best it could be 1/25
