Looking at a Herring Gull as you walk past will make it fly away sooner. Lewis Lamond and David N. Fisher used a novel method in this research, published in #BirdStudy 👉 tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10… Ian Hartley Taylor & Francis Research Insights #Ornithology

I just saw a pied wagtail try to mate with a dead goldfinch. I thought people might be interested to hear about this observation 😶

Trying to figure out what species of bird I accidentally flushed at a nature reserve (in the Midlands) today. Do common snipe make gravelly alarm calls when disturbed? Seems not judging by xeno-canto #birds #birdwatching

Do free-ranging dogs observe humans? And do they learn from them? e.g. when looking for food? Yes, yes, and yes! They do! 📷 Read our recently published paper on Current Zoology: Free-ranging dogs match a human’s preference in a foraging task academic.oup.com/cz/article/doi…

I have a new paper out today from my time at University of Exeter CEC, continuing the work of a master's student. We asked why some gull species are using urban areas while others seem to avoid them. Could bigger-brained birds be more likely to use them? Find out here: frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

Ever wondered what gulls really prefer to eat? 🐟or🥪 Out now: My 2nd #PhD paper, a study of Rescue* Herring gull chicks' food preferences, and whether they could be influenced by their early-life diet. *Chicks reared in captivity as they couldn't be returned to their parents

Is there a good statistics book out there that is suitable for someone starting a PhD in biosciences but isn't dry/heavy/wordy or expecting an advanced level of Maths? I'm looking for something that's easy to dip into and won't be overwhelming for someone relatively new to stats.
