Our ambitious idea-creating a species recovery program for threatened sharks and rays–would not have made it off the ground without Dr. Mark Erdmann. He built our team, developed relationships with the Indonesian government, established tagging and monitoring protocols, & more.

A tagged giant manta ray survived its capture and release in the Hawaii longline fishery, for at least the 60 days its tag was programmed. Check out its daily movements, it makes deep dives through the day, always returning to shallow waters, with one dive greater than 1000 m!

Science and passion are meant to be shared. Great experience collaborating with schools to share our work on #Zebrasharks. This kids are now experts in #photoID and know all about the life cycle of their new favorite shark! The Zebra Shark Project New Caledonia Aquarium des Lagons Lab. of Marine Biology and Ecology

Congrats Hawaii! Very interesting paper. We were able to find similar results in New Caledonia. Crazy how these large animals physically able to move distances are finally so sedentary. Huge implications for the conservation of the species.

#MantaMonday Did you know that the SE region is home to two giant manta ray nursery areas? The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary & Florida’s southeast coast (Atlantic) are giant manta ray nursery areas. For more about conservation efforts at fisheries.noaa.gov/species/giant-….

Excited to see our study out today in Science Advances! We use a data integration pipeline to evaluate the conservation role of #shark sanctuaries, and demonstrate how big data can help advance fisheries management in remote ocean regions. #PhDChapter1 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
